Give Change That Counts helping to Educate, Engage & Establish Change
As the spring season kicks into full swing, Savannah and the surrounding area will see an influx in individuals panhandling in our city squares, parks and roadways.
As a reminder, please do not encourage such behaviors by giving money to these individuals, but rather encourage them to seek resources at our local Day Center, located at 4429 Skidaway Road. Also here is a full list of panhandling reminders and resources for visitors.
If those that are panhandling become aggressive in any way, reach out to Savannah Police Department or Chatham County Police Department.
Give Change That Counts is raising funds to establish day centers for the homeless throughout Chatham County. Donations will be used directly for the establishment of day centers that include start-up costs, renovations, supplies, coordination, utilities, and more. Day Centers will provide a safe, friendly, and welcoming location where adult individuals who are experiencing homelessness can go during the day to enhance their quality of life. There are currently no day centers for the homeless in Savannah/Chatham County.
Give Change That Counts is part of a nationwide initiative called Streets to Stability which aims to create long-term sustainable solutions to reduce panhandling and homelessness in cities throughout the United States. The campaign is led by the Chatham Savannah Authority for the Homeless with collaboration and financial support from Chatham County, the City of Savannah, and major economic development groups including the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce/Visit Savannah, Savannah Downtown Business Association, Savannah Downtown Neighborhood Association, Savannah Economic Development Authority, Savannah’s Waterfront, and the Tourism Leadership Council.
