Juneteenth, Day of the Jubilee
June 23 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
FreeThe Day of the Jubilee: Reflections of Faith, Fortitude, & Freedom with Master Storyteller Lillian Grant-Baptiste. Juneteenth was also referred to by many formerly enslaved people as the day of Jubilee. Juneteenth or Jubilee is such a powerful holiday, for it commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth ushered in a time, be it ever so brief, of joy and jubilation. Ritual Celebrant and Master Storyteller Lillian Grant-Baptiste will use call and responses, recitations, affirmations, poetry, and storytelling to gather, inform, stir, and move the audience. This promises to be an exuberant, spirited, joyful, and at times, deeply reflective commemorative celebration. Lillian will tailor this performance to retell many of the powerful stories of freedom and liberation specific to Savannah. Grant-Baptiste will be accompanied by the awe inspiring Temakkah Maakheru, who will captivate the audience with the beat of her drum and melodic and soulful sound of her voice. This promises to be an uplifting, and riveting celebration that will keep the audience engaged and on the edge of their seats from the beginning of the performance until the very end!
